Trail Running Vest Capacity Guide: What Size Do You Actually Need?

4 min read

If you’re new to trail running—or starting to move into longer distances—choosing a hydration vest can be surprisingly confusing.

5L? 8L? 12L? 15L?

How much space do you actually need?

The answer depends on more than just race distance. How long you'll be on the trail, weather, mandatory gear, aid-station spacing, how much water you need to carry and whether you're racing or heading out unsupported all make a difference.

The goal isn't to buy the biggest vest you can find. You want enough room to comfortably carry what you need without hauling around a half-empty backpack.

Here’s a simple guide.

1–3 LITRES — MINIMALIST

Best for: Short runs, short races and very well-supported events.

These small vests are designed for runners who don't need to carry much beyond hydration and nutrition.

You can typically carry:

  • 1–2 soft flasks

  • Phone

  • Keys

  • Gels or small snacks

  • A few basic emergency items

These are great for shorter distances when you know water and support are readily available.

Good choice for: Approximately 5–15 km and short training runs.

4–6 LITRES — EVERYDAY TRAIL RUNNING

This is a great everyday size.

There's enough room for hydration and nutrition plus a few safety essentials without feeling like you're carrying a backpack.

You can typically carry:

  • 1–2 soft flasks

  • Extra nutrition

  • Phone

  • Lightweight jacket

  • Small first-aid kit

  • Emergency blanket

  • Gloves or light accessories

Good choice for: Approximately 10–25 km, regular training runs and shorter supported races.

7–9 LITRES — THE VERSATILE RACE VEST

For many trail runners, this is the sweet spot.

You have enough capacity for longer training days and races while still keeping the vest relatively light and compact.

There's usually room for:

  • 1–2+ litres of hydration

  • Several hours of nutrition

  • Jacket

  • Emergency blanket

  • Basic first aid

  • Gloves and toque

  • Phone

  • Mandatory race gear

  • Poles, depending on the vest design

Good choice for: Approximately 20–50 km, longer training days and trail races with moderate mandatory-gear requirements.

If you're looking for one vest that can cover a lot of your trail running, this is a great place to start.

10–12 LITRES — LONG DISTANCE & ULTRA

Once you're heading into longer races, bigger mountain days or events with a substantial mandatory-gear list, extra capacity becomes really useful.

A 10–12L vest gives you space for:

  • Waterproof jacket

  • Additional clothing layers

  • Gloves and toque

  • Emergency gear

  • First-aid supplies

  • More food

  • 1–2+ litres of fluid

  • Headlamp

  • Extra batteries

  • Mandatory race equipment

It also gives you something runners sometimes forget about:

Room to put your clothing when you take it off!

A vest might fit everything perfectly when you leave the house wearing your jacket, gloves and toque. Twenty minutes later you're hot and suddenly have nowhere to put any of it.

Good choice for: Marathon and 50K distances, ultras, long mountain training days and races with larger mandatory-gear lists.

13–15 LITRES — BIG MOUNTAIN DAYS

Now we're getting into the territory between a traditional running vest and a lightweight running pack.

These larger vests are useful when you need to be more self-sufficient.

Think:

  • Extra clothing

  • Waterproof layers

  • Significant nutrition

  • Larger hydration capacity

  • Water filtration

  • Emergency equipment

  • First aid

  • Headlamp and batteries

  • Poles

  • Larger mandatory-gear lists

Good choice for: 50K–100K+, remote races, long unsupported adventures and mountain environments where conditions can change quickly.

16–20+ LITRES — ADVENTURE TERRITORY

Most trail runners don't need this much capacity for a typical race.

But if you're heading into remote terrain, fastpacking, doing an overnight adventure or participating in an event with significant equipment requirements, the additional space can be necessary.

Good choice for: Remote ultras, overnight adventures, fastpacking and serious mountain days.

QUICK VEST CAPACITY GUIDE

16–20+ L

Remote adventures and fastpacking

DON'T CHOOSE YOUR VEST BY DISTANCE ALONE

This is important.

A 50K race with aid stations every 8–10 km could require less carrying capacity than a remote 25K race with a long stretch between aid stations.

Before choosing your vest, ask yourself:

  • How long will I actually be out there?

  • How far apart are the aid stations?

  • How much water do I personally drink?

  • Is there mandatory gear?

  • What weather could I encounter?

  • Do I need extra layers?

  • Am I racing or running unsupported?

  • Can I easily access my food and gear without taking the vest off?

Your answers will tell you far more than race distance alone.

DON'T FORGET ABOUT FIT

Capacity is only half the equation.

Your vest should fit snugly against your body without restricting your breathing. When loaded, it shouldn't bounce excessively, rub your neck or shoulders, or shift from side to side.

And always test your vest fully loaded.

A vest can feel amazing standing in the store with nothing in it and feel completely different once you add two full flasks, a jacket, food and mandatory gear.

Train in what you're going to race in.

WHAT SIZE SHOULD YOU BUY IF YOU ONLY WANT ONE VEST?

For most trail runners wanting one vest that can handle everyday training and progressively longer races, we would look in the 7–10 litre range.

If your goals are moving toward 25K–50K racing, consider roughly 8–12 litres, particularly if your races have mandatory gear requirements.

And remember: having the right capacity doesn't mean you need to fill every pocket.

Your vest isn't there to carry everything you might possibly want.

It's there to carry everything you actually need to run safely, comfortably and confidently.

Happy trails!
