Redefining Athletic Identity: Can I Still Call Myself an Athlete?
The Journey of Recovery:
After nearly two decades immersed in the world of ultra racing, I found myself grappling with a profound loss of identity due to my illness and the physical challenges it has possed. The thrill of racing, the camaraderie of fellow athletes, and the personal milestones I had achieved all seemed to fade into the background. This unexpected challenge forced me to reevaluate my life and the role that running has played in it, leading me to a place of introspection and transformation.
In this journey of self-discovery, I realized that my greater purpose lay in coaching others. By sharing my experiences and insights, I can help aspiring runners navigate their paths and achieve their goals.
Guiding others not only reignited my passion for the sport but also altered my style of coaching and my compassion and empathy. Each individual I coach brings their own struggles and triumphs, reminding me of the resilience inherent in the human spirit.
Taking Over 1 Trail Runner at a Time:
I have become even more determined to introduce others to the incredible world of trail running. The beauty of nature, the thrill of overcoming challenges, and the sense of community within this sport are unparalleled. As I help others on their own running journeys, I find that my identity is not lost but rather transformed, allowing me to embrace a new chapter filled with a greater purpose and connection. Through coaching, I am not only fostering the next generation of runners but also rediscovering my own identity in the process.
It's been a year of remission from my autoimmune disease. The journey has not been without its challenges, especially as I navigate not only the recovery from the autoimmune disease but also a hip replacement surgery, with another on the horizon.
This period of healing has not only altered my physical capabilities but has also reshaped my perspective on health and wellness. I’ve learned to appreciate the small victories, understanding that each step forward is a testament to resilience and determination.
As I reflect on my identity as an athlete, I grapple with the question of whether I can still claim that title. While my physical abilities have changed, my passion for sports remains unwavering. I have shifted my focus towards coaching, finding fulfillment in guiding others on their athletic journeys. This role has allowed me to stay connected to the sport I love while fostering a sense of community and support among my athletes. It’s a rewarding experience that has reignited my love for competition, albeit from a different vantage point.
Throughout this journey, the support from my friends, family, and team has been invaluable. Their encouragement has been a source of strength, reminding me that I am not alone in this process. Together, we celebrate the milestones, both big and small, and navigate the challenges that arise. This network of support has played a crucial role in my recovery and continues to inspire me to push forward, embracing each new day with hope and determination.
I’ve reached a point where the label of being an athlete doesn’t hold much significance for me anymore. What truly matters is that I can walk without pain again. This newfound freedom has shifted my focus away from titles and towards enjoying life with less physical limitations. Being able to move comfortably is a victory in itself, and I’m grateful for that.
